Hike 'til Your Heart is Content

Hiking in Berkeley Springs

With the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area just off the backyard, hiking is as easy as heading out the door and up the mountain. Be sure to bring a compass and water as there are 20,000+ acres to wander. Since this area does play host to hunters during the appropriate seasons, we also recommend that all those in your party wear brightly colored clothing.

The Woods offers a great map of hiking trails to follow.

They also make the same sort of warning regarding hiking during hunting season...

NOTE: Avoid hiking in Sleepy Creek during hunting seasons. For more information about hunting season dates see the WVDNR website at: http://www.wvdnr.gov/hunting/hunting.shtm

The Berkeley Springs website offers an overview of the Tuscarora Trail.

Hiking Upward offers a very detailed plan of hiking in Cacapon Resort State Park. When you've had enough nature and return to the Cacapon Resort State Park Main Lodge where you parked, relax on the deck of their courses Pro Shop and enjoy a sandwich as you watch the golfers hard at work.

A big thank you to our neighbor who suggested a new place to hike. It's called Devil's Nose and is a moderate level of difficulty with some decent inclines to help you work up a little bit of a sweat. It is an in and back trail so you can park in the trailhead's lot, hike in to Devil's Nose for a beautiful view, and then hike back out. The hike is pretty quick and was about an hour all told. The parking area can be found by entering 846 Maverick Trail, Hedgesville, WV into your GPS.

We just returned from hiking the Ziler Loop Trail in Cacapon State Park Resort. We started from Batt Shelter and made the climb and found it was well worth the hike but it was a pretty serious, inclined climb. Not for the faint of heart but just before you reach the top, there is a beautiful view looking down into the valley below despite the trees being in full. The distance heading north along the ridge was a pleasant and easy walk. Sam, my four-legged co-adventurer was the only wildlife we saw save a chipmunk when we first started. Only three fellow adventurers crossed our path in the three-ish hour hike. The total length was about five miles. Hope you have as beautiful a day as we had if you decide to head out.
